Dr. Bok Kyu Choi (Leiden University)

Dr. Choi is currently affiliated with the Leiden University as a visiting lecturer on Korean martial arts theory and practise.

He obtained a masters degree from the Seoul National University researching the modern history of Korean martial arts and a Ph.D. (also from SNU) with his dissertation on the interpretation of the Muyedobotongji and its significance in modern times. He has arguably been called a pioneer in the field of 'martial science', endeavouring to make martial arts a mainstream academic subject.

In 2004 he became a Professor at Youngsan University in Busan. As a researcher he is still affiliated with the Seoul National University and he frequently publishes for the national newspapers Chosun Ilbo and Munhwa Ilbo. Over the past ten years he has co-operated as a martial arts expert to countless TV shows, cultural manifestations and documentaries including a National Geographic series on oriental martial arts in 2005.

Dr. Choi established the East Asian Martial Arts Institute, currently known as KIMA (Korean Institute for Martial Arts). The main subject of his current efforts is the English edition of the Korean martial arts classic Muyedobotongji.
